Ioannis Chatzinikolaou
Ioannis Chatzinikolaou is an accomplished flutist and educator with deep roots in both classical and traditional Greek music. Born in Volos, Greece, his musical journey began at the age of eight at the Greek Conservatory of Volos, where he laid the groundwork for what would become a rich and multifaceted career.
In 1992, after four years of early training, Ioannis enrolled in the Municipal Conservatory of Volos. There, he honed his technique and deepened his musical understanding, eventually graduating with honors in 2008. His dedication to excellence led him to participate in numerous national and international music competitions between 1999 and 2008, gaining valuable experience and recognition.
Throughout his career, Ioannis has studied under some of the most respected musicians and educators in Europe, attending masterclasses and seminars both in Greece and abroad. His performance experience is equally extensive. From 1995 to 2007, he was a core member of the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Municipality of Volos, and he also performed with the Symphony Orchestra of Volos and other major symphonic ensembles throughout Greece. His collaborations with renowned conductors and musicians helped shape his understanding of ensemble playing, orchestral balance, and musical interpretation.
In addition to his classical performance work, Ioannis has a strong connection to Greek traditional music. His curiosity and respect for this musical heritage led him in 2018 to begin studying the Kaval—an ancient Greek flute used in traditional dance and folk music. Under the guidance of renowned teacher Stavroula Tryfiatis, he developed an appreciation for the historical and cultural depth of the instrument, blending it with his classical sensibilities to create a unique artistic voice.
Since 2008, Ioannis has made Cyprus his home, where he contributes actively to the local music scene. He is a member of the Limassol Municipality Philharmonic and has taught flute extensively in both public institutions and private academies. He currently teaches in Limassol and is also a valued instructor at the Music Academy ‘Aspa Vasiliou’ in Paphos.
A versatile performer, Ioannis participates in orchestras and ensembles spanning classical, traditional, and contemporary music genres. His work includes numerous recording projects for albums, television, and theater productions, where he continues to promote the richness of Greek musical tradition alongside modern performance practices.
As an educator, Ioannis is deeply committed to nurturing young musicians. He brings to each lesson a blend of technical rigor, historical insight, and a passion for sharing the beauty of music—from Baroque sonatas to the folk melodies of his homeland.
